Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle and essential to helping prevent serious health concerns such as heart disease and diabetes. According to the CDC’s February 2012 issue of Vital Signs™, reducing the sodium Americans eat by 1,200mg per day on could save up to $20 billion a year in medical costs.

Independence Blue Cross understands this problem and was looking for a way to motivate its employees to make healthier decisions about what they ate and increase their nutrition knowledge. Using an incentives and rewards system which incorporated reloadable, prepaid cards, Independence Blue Cross was able to help employees track their meals and make better choices. The case study examines the effectiveness of two incentives methods, an end-of-program raffle where participants were entered to win $1,000 and periodic incentives that increased from $20 per week to $60 per week as the program went on.
