Improving patient experiences through targeted, personalized engagement

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey is New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is a part of Rutgers Health, the most comprehensive academic healthcare provider organization in New Jersey. CINJ targets cancer with precision medicine, immunotherapy, and clinical trials to provide advanced and comprehensive cancer care to adults and children.

In order to provide a more personalized patient experience and better comply with various requirements, GoMo Health and CINJ created the Concierge program for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Personalized outpatient digital therapeutic for oncology management that delivers supportive content to patients and caregivers to empower them to take an active role in dependent and self-care.

The program enhances provider oversight by tracking patient-reported distress, monitoring oral oncolytic medication adherence, identifying warning signs of potential adverse events, and helping to foster self-confidence for both patients and caregivers.

Patients undergoing cancer treatment and their caregivers

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: PROGRAM OUTCOMES:
  • Provide a more personalized patient experience that increases adherence to treatment protocols and overall patient satisfaction
  • Enable the care coordination team to more consistently and cost effectively serve patients and their families both inside and outside of the physical hospital setting
1,065 potential adverse events avoided through data collected and escalated in real-time to the care team from surveys. Top escalation issues:

  • 55% related to physical symptoms or treatment side effects
  • 13% depression
  • 11% extreme distress
  • 8% fatigue caused by anxiety
  • 5% sadness

"This program helped guide me through treatment, side effects, and when to call for additional help. It even saved my life because I reported a side effect that needed immediate attention."

Program Components

  • Care Communications:

Upon enrollment, participants receive text messages that guide patients and caregivers with management of their oncology diagnosis. Some messages contain links to online resources with additional educational information in the form of interactive surveys, videos, and music tracks (see Care Companion). Topics include general oncology and symptom support, oral healthcare, lifestyle, mental health challenges, and caregiver support.

  • Care Companion:

This cloud-based learning management system (LMS) provides vetted educational content that is personalized by participants’ self expressed priorities and interests, structured into easy-to-follow sections to promote independent education, learning, and self-care management.

  • GoMo Chat:

Much like a typical text conversation, GoMo (secure) Chat allows live messaging between participants and their care team, enabling in the - moment, on demand conversations.

  • Secure Data Collection and Reporting:

Engagement and experience data is deidentified, analyzed, and reported back to providers for ongoing quality, clinical delivery and service improvement.
