Tips for the New Mom, the Working Mom, the Mom on a Budget, and the Empty Nester

Mother’s Day is coming soon, and to prepare, we are eager to join hospitals, health plans, and pharmaceutical companies to support all types of moms. Moms come in all shapes and sizes, with different goals, lifestyles, and needs. Some are new moms, while some are welcoming an empty nest. Some are working, and some are living on a tight one-income budget. Here are 25 tips for any type of mom, whoever you may be!

For the Working Mom

  1. Avoid multitasking. You will perform better at work when you are focused fully on the task at hand. Try not to think about after-work activities while you are at work, and don’t let your mind drift to work to-dos while helping with your kids’ homework in the evening.
  2. Discuss flexibility in your work schedule with your employer. Establishing expectations for your work hours and aligning them with your workplace’s needs will ensure that there is a clear delineation between family time and work time.
  3. Prioritize sleep if nothing else. Establish and enforce a bedtime for yourself and your children so that you do not drag during the day, wasting time by being under-rested.
  4. Combat mom guilt. This discomfort is temporary! Remind yourself why you work to keep yourself motivated.
  5. Ask for help, whether it’s from your partner, a family member or friends. Don’t be afraid to let others lend a helping hand, especially if you need it.

For the Mom on a Budget

  1. Travel in the off-season when going on vacation. You will avoid the crowds while saving money on accommodations and airfare.
  2. Be a “local” tourist – look for attractions close to home that don’t require an overnight hotel stay. Search for state parks, historic landmarks, and community events near your home which may be low cost or even free to check out.
  3. Plan out your family’s menu for the week. Planning a menu at the beginning of the week can save money and time. Buy what you need in bulk and stick to your meal plan to avoid unnecessary purchases at the grocery store. Meal prep as many meals as possible toward the beginning of the week and freeze the leftovers so you have quick, healthy meals on hand as the week unfolds.
  4. Check out “Kids Eat Free” nights at your favorite restaurants. These deals will save you money when your children are below a certain age.
  5. Aim for an eco-friendly lifestyle to save money and help the environment at the same time. Use cloth napkins, reusable water bottles, energy-efficient light bulbs, and reusable bags for groceries and lunches instead of their disposable counterparts. Turn down your water heater and get into the habit of turning off lights when someone leaves the room.
  6. Buy sale items in bulk. Buying items like meat, cereals, and toilet paper when they are on sale instead of when you run out can save you hundreds of dollars per year. These are typically items that a family will always need, so next time you see a coupon or sale price, stock up!
  7. Use browser extensions to help you save when shopping online. Install the Honey extension to your browser and watch as coupons are automatically applied to your shopping cart, reducing your subtotal as if by magic. Sign up for Ebates and get up to 40% cash back at popular stores like Walmart, Kohl’s, Amazon, and Macy’s. Once installed for free, these tools can help you save hundreds of dollars per year.

For the Empty Nester

  1. Exercise for a mood boost and to get out of the house. Regular workouts will give you an endorphin boost and create additional opportunities to be social.
  2. Give back and volunteer. This is a great way to utilize your skills and make an impact on the community around you.
  3. Add ‘date night’ to your calendar with your spouse, partner, girlfriends, or just yourself. Spend more time with the other people in your life that you love and make enjoying yourself a priority.
  4. Travel somewhere you’ve always wanted to go but never had the time.
  5. Make a list of goals that you would like to tackle now that you have more time on your hands. Your goals may be in your career, going back to school, or taking up a new hobby. Whatever you choose to accomplish, enjoy this time to focus on yourself.
  6. Keep in touch with your kids, because they aren’t gone forever! Maintain connections through visits, phone calls, emails, texts or video chats. Setting up a routine schedule for these visits are a good way to regularly keep in touch.
